There are two kinds of bees commonly found in Canada: bumble bees and honey bees.
There are over 20,000 known species of bees. Bumble bees and honey bees make up only about 260 of all sub-species of bees. Due to aggressive bee removal, several of these species of bees are considered endangered and have bee conservation sites dedicated to them.
Generally, both kinds of bees are less aggressive than wasps, and will only sting as a last resort as stinging removes their stinger, killing them. However, it is recommended that homeowners remove bee nests as large colonies of bees can still pose a threat.
Bumble bees are thick and furry in appearance. Like most bees they are black and yellow though they may also have other colour markings. They do not collect and store excess amounts of honey, though they are good pollinators, and tend to live in smaller colonies. They occasionally build their nests in unwelcome spots such as under porches, in garages, insulation, crawl spaces and other areas inhabited by humans. It is generally recommended that you call a bee removal company to have them removed if they are spotted in your home or yard.
Honeybees are distinguished from bumble bees in that they are the only kinds of bees that produce surpluses of honey. They are thinner than bumble bees, but have the same furry appearance. Occasionally they build their bee nests in walls or attics. To spot signs of a hidden nest, see our blog on the subject. Since honey bees do not die in the fall like wasps do, homes in which bee nests have existed for several years may be especially dangerous. In some cases, hundreds of pounds of honey have been removed from homes where honey bee nests have accumulated over many years. Even if a bee nest is abandoned by one colony of bees, it may later become inhabited by a new colony, so if you have a honey bee nest in your home, even a dormant one, it is important to remove it.
