The Difference Between Killer Bees and Killer Wasps, and Where They Live

facts about wasp infestation

Here’s a trick question: what is the difference between killer bees and killer wasps? You might be shocked to find that there is no such thing as a killer wasp.

In fact, wasps are a giant family of insects that are far different than bees. So before you proceed with wasp removal, it’s best to educate yourself on what type of wasp infestation you are dealing with.

Handling Your Bee or Wasp Infestation

Most people have a hard time seeing the difference between bees and wasps. But if your bee exterminator asks, wasps are noticeably more colourful, bigger and virtually hairless. Identifying the type of wasp is more challenging as species of wasps range from hornets to yellow jackets to mud wasps.

For the purpose of your wasp removal strategy, remember that wasps tend to be more aggressive. Because of this, make sure any bee exterminator is also experienced and equipped to deal with aggressive wasps. Otherwise seek out a pest control company that specializes in wasp removal because a severe wasp infestation is serious matter.

Killer Bees Live in Ontario? False!

Moving away from wasp infestations, let’s discuss how to handle killer bees. Are there even killer bees in Ontario? Fortunately, they don’t exist. The killer bee, also known as the Africanized bee, is actually only seen in Africa, South America and some southern U.S States. Interestingly enough, these bees are man-made and were actually a breeding experiment by scientists to make a honey-making super-bee.

Mission accomplished, sort of. After being taken to Brazil, these bees slowly developed colonies in Latin America. Everyone remembers the scare a few summers back when killer bees were seen migrating north. While they have been spotted in Texas and Florida, these bees aren’t yet capable of migrating further north. So don’t expect a sighting of any killer bees in Ontario anytime soon.

Now you know. There’s no such thing as a killer wasp and killer bees probably don’t live near you. That being said, any severe bee or wasp infestation is still dangerous and should be handled by a trained professional.
