Bee and wasp stings range in severity depending on if you have a bee or wasp allergy. Reactions vary from stinging pain for those who are immune, to severe swelling and anaphylaxis in those who are severely allergic to bees or wasps. Bee and wasp stings are very rarely fatal, even in people with wasp and bee allergies. Only 1 to 2 % of the population has a significant sensitivity to wasp and/or bee stings.
People who are severely allergic to wasps may not react to bee stings and visa versa. It’s also possible to grow out of bee and wasp allergies. Studies show that approximately 50% of adults and 80% of children outgrow a bee or wasp allergy.
How can you know if you are one of the people with a bee or wasp allergy? The only way to know for sure is to undergo wasp and bee allergy testing. If you’re concerned you may have had symptoms of a bee allergy or a wasp allergy, speak to your doctor. There are a few testing methods that will reveal whether or not you should be especially careful to avoid bee and wasp stings.
During a skin test, a tiny amount of venom will be injected into your skin, usually on your arm or back, to determine whether or not a reaction will take place. The test is safe and will not cause a severe reaction. If you have a bee allergy or a wasp allergy, a bump will develop. If there is no bump, you’re considered bee and wasp allergy-free.
There are several types of blood testing that test your blood’s immunity to enzymes and allergens that appear in bee or wasp stings. A common test is the radioallergosorbent test, or RAST, which tests your blood’s immunity to immunoglobulin E (IgE), a common antibody in bee and wasp venom. Blood testing is not absolutely guaranteed to reveal a bee or wasp allergy. 10% of people who are allergic to bees or wasps will get a negative result.
